Transitioning from Commercial Liquid Shampoos to Shampoo Bars

Commercial shampoos are laden with chemical detergents like sulfates which could irritate your scalp. These chemicals strip off your natural oils making your scalp produce more oil to compensate for the moisture lost. It also has additives to make your hair smooth, soft, and shiny, which builds up on your hair over time.

Transitioning from commercial cleansers to shampoo bars may take time. Your hair and scalp are used to being washed with traditional detergents, so the natural oil production rebalances as you use the shampoo bar.

Washing your hair with a solid shampoo may feel heavy and sticky at first, but give it a few washes to remove the build up from your old shampoos. They’re chock-full of healthy plant-based oils so just allow it to heal your scalp and you’ll feel its benefits after continued use.

One way to combat the heavy/sticky feeling is to use an Apple Cider Vinegar rinse. Here’s a great recipe to start off.

Another way is to not lather the bar directly on your hair. Maybe you’re just putting too much product. Use your hands to get some shampoo, let it lather, then massage it to your mane.

Every person’s experience is unique. It may take you just a few days to adjust or even a month or so. Or maybe you got the wrong type of shampoo bar. Choose one that complements your hair type and scalp. An oily scalp vs a dry scalp has different needs.

So here’s to saving the earth by reducing our plastic wastes one shampoo bottle at a time and here’s to a healthier scalp by ditching the chemical laden cleansers!
